Mississippi Governor Silent on Journalist Assault While Promoting State Tourism

On July 3, 2025, independent journalist Matthew Reardon was assaulted by a Mississippi State Trooper while filming a peaceful protest on a public sidewalk outside the Governor’s Mansion in Jackson.

Since the incident, Governor Tate Reeves has remained silent. Despite multiple social media posts touting Mississippi’s business growth and tourism, Reeves has failed to respond to public comments calling attention to the First Amendment violation.

“Mississippi doesn’t get to claim success while suppressing dissent,” Reardon commented on one such post. “The lawsuit’s coming. The people are watching.”

Reardon’s message to the Governor, Attorney General, and DOJ can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/-5L5gmf4rVM

Since that time, the Mississippi governor has continually posted on social media, attempting to paint Mississippi in a false light while ignoring critical issues at hand regarding its intentional violation of constitutional rights.

And then after approximately two weeks of silence from the governor’s office, Reardon comes forward with some shocking allegations.
