Public Surveillance vs. Abusive Security: HUB Security Checked at the Lafayette Government Office
Surveillance is not a one-way street. The federal government conducts surveillance. State agencies conduct surveillance. And when justified, even citizens conduct surveillance on law enforcement. Accountability flows both directions—that is the essence of a free society.
Today at the Lafayette Consolidated Government building, inside the Mayor-President’s office area, HUB Security once again tried to interfere with lawful public recording. This isn’t new. It’s a pattern. The same mindset that empowers low-level private security groups—like HUB Security here in Lafayette Parish or Allied Universal, the same agency tied to violent incidents in New Orleans—creates an environment where cameras are treated as threats instead of tools of accountability.
The reality is simple: If government and private contractors can surveil the public, then the public is absolutely entitled to surveil them.
This video documents yet another attempt to demonize a camera rather than address the underlying misconduct. Transparency is not optional. The First Amendment is not negotiable. And independent journalism is essential—especially when institutions try to stop the public from seeing what really happens inside their own government buildings.

ASSAULTED AT CITY HALL: New Orleans Security Guard Violently Attacks Journalist, Destroys Evidence
On November 12, 2025, I walked into New Orleans City Hall as an independent journalist to document government operations. Minutes later, I was violently assaulted by a City Hall security guard, struck hard enough to split my head open, and left bleeding on the lobby floor while city employees walked past me.
The guard then picked up my phone and slammed it to the ground, destroying the evidence of his attack. This was an intentional act—an attempt to eliminate the record of a crime committed under the roof of City Hall.
What followed was worse:
NOPD refused to arrest the attacker, refused to provide a victim information card, refused to give a report number, and admitted they had no idea what Louisiana victim-rights laws even require.
This is government violence. This is suppression of the press.
And this is why We The People News exists.

BREAKING NEWS out of Louisiana
I am Matthew Reardon, an investigative journalist who runs the "We the People News" platform, and I am fighting back against the government's attempt to impose a sweeping gag order on my criminal case. I have respectfully opposed the government’s Motion for a Protective Order (Doc. 23) and the continuation of the Interim Protective Order (Doc. 24).
The government is trying to stop me—a journalist with over 3,000 subscribers—from possessing copies of or publicly discussing the evidence in my own criminal case. I believe this protective order is a continuation of the very suppression of speech that led to this prosecution.
My Fight for Transparency: This entire case arose because I engaged in constitutionally protected activities: documenting my interactions with federal law enforcement and protesting what I discovered—through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request—was unlawful surveillance (a BOLO alert) targeting my journalism.
I believe the materials the government now seeks to shield from public scrutiny are central to understanding their improper motivation and the retaliatory nature of this entire prosecution. They claim the documents are sensitive, but I have already lawfully published extensive records from the FOIA request, including communications between U.S. Marshals and courthouse staff, two days before my arrest on August 25, 2025. I also livestreamed the incident and have already published extensive video documentation on my YouTube channel, meaning much of the supposedly "sensitive" information is already public.
The government has failed to demonstrate "good cause" for imposing these sweeping restrictions, relying only on vague, generalized assertions about courthouse security. This case raises fundamental questions about First Amendment protection for journalists, government surveillance (BOLO alerts) against citizens, and how federal law enforcement responds to accountability journalism. The public has an overwhelming interest in transparency to ensure the government respects constitutional boundaries. I argue that I should not be gagged from discussing my own prosecution.
